We recommend blood tests to screen for possible health problems prior to administering anesthesia to your pet. This page outlines the different laboratory tests available for your pet before surgery.

Pre Surgical Blood Testing

Packed Cell volume (PCV) - Indicates the amount of red cells in the blood. A low PCV Indicates anemia.
Total Protein - Total Protein levels can indicate a variety of conditions, including dehydration
And diseases of the liver, kidneys and intestines.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) - High levels in the blood can indicate dehydration or kidney disease
Electrolytes (Na, K, CL) - Electrolytes are important in evaluating vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration
   And heart symptoms

A CBC - provides detailed information on red cells, white cells, and platelets. Abnormal white cell counts
can indicate leukemia, stress, infection, or decreased immunity. Low red cells indicates
Anemia. Low platelets can indicate a bleeding problem.

CBC, electrolytes, and the following blood chemistries:
Blood Glucose (GLU) - High levels can indicate stress or diabetes. Low levels may indicate liver
    Disease, infection, or certain tumors
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) - High levels indicate kidney disease or dehydration. Low levels can
    Indicate liver disease
Creatinine (CREA) - Elevated levels can indicate kidney disease, urinary tract obstruction or

    dehydration
Aanine Aminotransferase (ALT) - Elevated with liver disease
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALKP) - Elevated levels can indicate liver disease, Cushing’s disease,
    Or steroid therapy.
Total Protein (TP) - Can indicate a variety of conditions, including dehydration, and diseases
Of the liver, kidney, or intestines.
