Some of the most frequently asked questions are listed and answered on the following pages. These are simply generalizations, and are not necessarily specific recommendations for your pet. Please consult your veterinarian if there are any questions about your pet’s care.

Can I give my pet anything for pain at home?

Can I give my pet anything for itching at home?

The safest human anti-inflammatory for otherwise healthy animals is buffered aspirin. It is dosed at 10 to 25 mg/kg, or 82.5mg per 15 pounds body weight. As with humans, side effects such as upset stomach and intestinal bleeding can occur, so please contact your veterinarian if needed.

The most common causes of itching in animals are flea infestation and skin allergies. In the case of allergies, Benadryl is a mild but effective anithistamine to help with itchng. The dose is approximateily 1mg per pound, or 1 human capsule per 25 pounds body weight. The most common side effect is sedation.

Can I give my pet anything for vomiting at home?

With the many additives in human over the counter stomach upset medications, you must be very careful in what you give your pet. Simple Pepto Bismol (with nothing else in it) at about 1tsp per 10 pounds body weight may help settle your pets stomach. However, vomiting and diarrhea may be signs of serious disease, and your vet should probably be contacted.
